The project responds to the client’s need for additional bedroom space within the existing home, aiming to create a private and comfortable retreat without extending the building footprint. Designed to form a distinctive new bedroom with en-suite accommodation, the scheme transforms the loft both internally and externally.

A carefully considered layout, combined with a large Crittall-style window, enhances the sense of openness and natural light. This establishes a strong visual connection to the surrounding tree canopy and evokes a calm, retreat-like atmosphere. The arrangement also makes efficient use of the roof space, improving both functionality and comfort.

Externally, the crisp geometry of the dormer and the use of standing-seam cladding introduce a contemporary architectural language. This is set in deliberate contrast with the cottage’s traditional character, allowing old and new elements to sit in dialogue. The result is a balanced and coherent composition that feels both sensitive and confident.
